Simplest Way To Make Your Art Fit In Your Frame

Have you ever tried putting your matted artwork into a frame and it doesn't fit? It can be very untimely and infuriating. Sometimes mats will fit into the frame and sometimes it doesn’t, therefore it is important to measure your art first! Measuring your art package includes: Art/Photo, mount board, mat with window or uncut mat, and glazing (acrylic or glass).

Why is it important to know the sizes of your artwork?
So you can save a lot of time and frustration! Knowing the sizes, will definitely help you fit your art into a frame in no time!

How do you measure your artwork?
1.Verify the size of your frame's rabbet. (Rabbet is a rectangular cut/ groove made to hold two pieces together; to form a joint)
2.The art package should add up to a measurement that’s less than the rabbet.
3.Add the thickness of each element of the art package using these guidelines:
-The thickness of framing-quality acrylic or glass is usually 1/8" or .125
-Standard, 4 ply mats are usually 1/16” (about 1.4mm) Double this if you're using a double mat or 8 ply mat.
- Backing Board is 1/16" thick
-Foam board is 1/8" thick
-Artwork doesn't usually add any thickness to the package (unless it's 3D or a really thick and wavy paper), so no need to add anything for this section.
-Mount board varies in thickness.
-4UB is 3/32” (.09375).

EX: Add like fractions: Acrylic 1/8 – change to (2/16) + Single Mat (1/16) + Backing Board (1/16)  = total 4/16, which is the same as 1/4″. This is the size of your art package dimension.
